[00:00:07] Scott Benton: Hey everyone, Scott Benton here. How are you? I’m the host of the Classroom 2 Courtroom podcast where we help you easily transition from a law school student into your professional career as an attorney and where we make the practice of law fun. Now today we’re going to answer the question of how can I make going to my attorney job easy?
[00:00:25] Scott Benton: How can I make going to my attorney job easy?
[00:01:00]
[00:01:16] Scott Benton: So whenever we start a new job, we’re usually so excited about it that we’re practically. jumping out of our skin from time to time, and we actually can’t wait to get in the next day. And sometimes we don’t even want to leave at night when they close down the office.
[00:01:29] Scott Benton: Then, of course, as time goes by, and as you receive more and more responsibility, and as you begin to work on more and more cases, eventually you become fully entrenched with your job and all the pressures and the workload that entails that there’s a tendency sometimes for many people To begin to find themselves at some point in a mindset where going to work becomes difficult to do.
[00:01:53] Scott Benton: Now, work definitely doesn’t need to feel like something that’s difficult to go into every workday. In fact, there are many ways [00:02:00] to make going to work easy that are more than worth exploring, and be forewarned that they do take a little bit of effort, but the rewards are going to be more than worth it, as I think that you’re going to see.
[00:02:11] Scott Benton: Now, although this episode doesn’t necessarily seem like it would be aligned with the to do list stage of the success cycle that we talk about frequently on the Classroom 2 Courtroom podcast, because we’re looking at what it’s going to take to make going to work easy, ultimately it takes us back to the success cycle, and ultimately we’re going to end up back where we always start, which is on the to do list.
[00:02:34] Scott Benton: But first, one of the most important things that you can do to make going to work easy every day is with an expression of simple gratitude. Now, I know that sounds cliche, but you need to remember that your work is important. Your work is helping clients live a higher quality of life than they otherwise could have achieved.
[00:02:53] Scott Benton: You’re helping clients over and over again. And something that. Over time, it’s simply going to make a [00:03:00] massive amount of difference to hundreds, if not thousands of clients that you provide legal services to. And in the end, your work makes the world a better place. If you express gratitude for the opportunity that you have to bring improvement to the many lives you serve, that alone is going to make it easy for you to come to work every day.
Next, as we talk about a lot on this podcast, you want to celebrate your wins. Wins can be anything from big victories that might take years to achieve, like winning cases that provide a significant amount of money for your clients, all the way to working with your paralegal team preparing for a hearing or a trial.
[00:03:39] Scott Benton: And while it’s important to celebrate big wins, it’s arguably more important to celebrate small wins because you have many small wins every single day. And by consistently focusing on those victories, you maintain a positive culture of growth and momentum. When you stop celebrating wins By default, your [00:04:00] work environment stops spiraling up, which is what you want, and it begins to start spiraling down in the other direction, the direction that you don’t want.
[00:04:09] Scott Benton: So to make sure you’re coming into a positive office environment, you want to express gratitude for the work you’re doing, and you want to celebrate the wins, big or small. And by the way, that includes celebrating the wins of others as well. When you see something a colleague has accomplished, make sure to shine the spotlight on those wins in addition to your own.
[00:04:29] Scott Benton: If you really want to supercharge the production of positive energy, because celebrating the wins of others is also an expression of gratitude, which simply compounds the net positive results. And that benefits everyone.
[00:04:42] Scott Benton: The last thing we’re gonna talk about, which is something we talk about a lot and largely what this podcast is built entirely around, that we make it very easy every day to go to your job, is to use the success cycle.
[00:04:56] Scott Benton: The success cycle has three parts that I’ll just [00:05:00] mention quickly and that you’re going to understand in greater depth the more you listen to this podcast. But the three parts of the success cycle are the to do list, performing the legal services from that to do list, and then billing for your time and getting paid.
[00:05:14] Scott Benton: Then you simply start all over again, you repeat the cycle around and around you go. This is going to be the necessary ingredient That you’re going to need to practice law as an attorney and it’s the missing piece they don’t teach you in law school. So the last thing I’ll mention that really makes it easy to go to work is the last thing you want to do before closing up shop and going home is you want to sit down and update your to do list.
[00:05:38] Scott Benton: Now when you leave for the day, your to do list should already have everything listed out and prioritized for the next day. So when you come in You’re ready to go. You can get your cup of coffee. You can immediately sit down at your desk and you get started in on your work. And before you realize it, you’re going to quickly hit and surpass your minimum billable hourly goal.
[00:05:58] Scott Benton: So I hope those are [00:06:00] helpful tips that are going to make it easy for you to go to your job as an attorney every single day. In short, to recap, we want you to express gratitude, we want you to celebrate your wins, and at the end of the day, we want you to update your to do list, which is going to make a world of difference.
[00:06:14] Scott Benton: All three together is going to make your life very easy when it comes to the subject of going into work every day. I’m Scott Benton.
