Scott Benton: Today we’re going to tackle an important topic, which is turning setbacks into opportunities.
For the most part, setbacks are going to be inevitable in any career and working in the area of law is no exception. So whether it’s losing a case or receiving critical feedback or facing unexpected challenges, it’s how you handle those setbacks that can significantly impact your career trajectory.
When you find yourself in a setback, while you might feel like you’re under a lot of pressure, you always want to remember that you’ve got a choice in how you respond. And you’ve probably heard about breaking down the word responsibility and that you can choose to respond with ability.
And that’s what you’ll be facing here. So in other words, you can let setbacks slow you down or you can look those setbacks in the [00:02:00] eye and you can learn the lesson and essentially flip it around so you’re even more knowledgeable than before. So let’s explore how to convert setbacks into achievements.
First, it’s essential to reframe your mindset. Now, again, this is hard to do when you’re in the middle of a setback which can just plunge you into a feeling of crisis. So, you need to find a way to become level headed when you’re anything but level headed. And that’s the heavy lifting that you need to do when you find yourself in that place where you want to panic, which shuts off your brain. But you want to be able to remain calm and thoughtful, and that’s what sets the amateurs apart from the pros. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, The pros see them as a learning experience and an opportunity.
And if you need to get yourself to that same level of ability, then you’re going to have to respond that way with calmness and thoughtfulness as well. That way you can respond with ability. Now, [00:03:00] every setback provides improvement and growth. For instance, if you lose a case, Then you want to sit down and you want to be able to take the time to analyze what went wrong.
Was it a lack of preparation, for instance? Did you miss a critical piece of evidence? Did you need to build a stronger relationship with your client so that you could get to a higher level of trust and then really dig down deeper into their story of what brought them to your firm in the first place?
We like to say here at our firm that you want to dig three layers deep and maybe you just weren’t able to get to that type of depth. Now you want to use this analysis to help identify areas that are slated for improvement. Ironically, making mistakes and learning from them is the shortcut to becoming a truly excellent attorney as quickly as possible. Second, you want to embrace the importance of resilience.
Now resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and to keep moving forward anyway in spite of those setbacks. So it’s going to be about maintaining a [00:04:00] positive attitude and staying focused on your long term goals.
Remember, resilience isn’t about never experiencing setbacks. It’s about responding to them. Response ability.
One effective strategy for building resilience is to develop a support network. So you want to be able to surround yourself with mentors and colleagues and friends who can offer guidance and encouragement, and who can provide constructive feedback to you. Now these key relationships can give you a valuable source of strength and perspective when you’re facing challenges or any of the uphill battles that you’re fighting.
So you want to make sure that you’re always nurturing those connections that you have. Another way to turn setbacks into opportunities is the idea of continuous learning. Now the legal field is constantly evolving, so staying current on new developments becomes critical.
Use setbacks as a catalyst for further education and skill development. Instead of letting setbacks stop you, let them propel you forward.
you can even get angry if you like. As long [00:05:00] as you use that anger constructively, and you say to yourself, That’s never gonna happen to me again. And then you make a vow, and you do something about it. Whether it’s taking additional CLE courses, or attending workshops, or seeking out new learning resources, a dedication to continuous education is gonna keep you far ahead of the curve.
It’s also important to maintain a growth mindset. A growth mindset is that belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed and improved upon through dedication and hard, hard work. Now, this growth mindset encourages you to persist in the face of setbacks, and to view effort as a path to mastery.
So by adopting a growth mindset, you’re much more likely to see setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles.
Turning setbacks into opportunities is also going to affect how you use the success cycle, which is the productivity tool that we talk about all the time on this podcast that’s composed of three parts, and which teaches [00:06:00] you how to actually practice law, a subject that you don’t learn about in law school.
So once you begin to learn from your setbacks, it’s really going to help you streamline the effectiveness of utilizing the success cycle. For instance, your to do list, or what we call the G sheet in the graphic, that by the way it stands for Get It Done, but it’s really a to do list. So the to do list is going to be far more accurate, it’s going to be easier to assemble, and it’s maybe going to be shorter and more streamlined.
That, in turn, is going to help you when you’re performing your legal services from that to do list and when you bill for your time. Learning from setbacks is going to help you understand the bigger picture when it comes to your overall performance requirements as an attorney. Journaling can also be a powerful tool for turning setbacks into opportunities.
So you want to reflect on the situation and write down your thoughts. In the setback that you just experienced, What went well? What could have been done differently? What did you learn from this experience? Now this process of deeper [00:07:00] reflection can help you plan out your improvements for the next time around.
Finally, you want to celebrate your wins, no matter how big or small those wins are. Recognizing and celebrating your successes can really boost your confidence and your motivation, which makes it easier to stay positive and resilient in the face of setbacks.
Take the time to really acknowledge your achievements and use them as a reminder of your capabilities and your high potential. Don’t just focus on the negative. What did you do well and what did you do that was truly excellent? Don’t forget to keep your mind positive even in the face of setbacks. I’m Scott Benton.
